About Oamaru Shingle Supplies
From 1965 to Now
It all started in 1965 when Oamaru Shingle Supplies Limited purchased a quarry owned by Oamaru Ready-Mix, Peter Rae Industries and Fulton Hogan. After extracting high quality greywacke from the alluvial gravel deposits located on the Waitaki River plains the operation processed the river-run material into various aggregate types (base-course, crusher dust, roading chip etc.)
Aggregate production formed the cornerstone of the business for many years until, in the mid-1980’s, Oamaru Shingle Supplies Ltd branched out to acquire two masonry plants in the lower South Island.
The Hilderthorpe masonry plant was the first taken on board with the second plant purchased from Firth Industries in Invercargill some years later. It was at this time that Firth acquired shares in Oamaru Shingle Supplies Ltd by taking over Oamaru Ready-Mix. This relationship provided valuable expertise, enabling Oamaru Shingle Supplies Ltd to maintain our high quality standards in this specialised field. Firth also became the distribution, sales and marketing arm for the masonry and paving.
Our continual business review led to further changes in 2004 when the Invercargill Masonry Plant was closed and a new block plant was established in Cromwell. This modern plant provides the same high quality products as before but from a more centralised point of distribution to help meet the needs of our market.
The latest addition to our product range is through Oamaru Shingle Supplies Ltd distribution of Humes products. It was only logical to build our stock to include specific infrastructural, rural, building, and construction products that are already used alongside our aggregates and masonry!
